As mandatory checks ahead of World Winter games slated March 14th, -26th March 2017 in Austria, Special Olympics Uganda on 18th February 2017, conducted a one day eye screening activity which is part of health program sponsored by Lions Club International Golisano Foundation, and supported by Ophthalmology Association of Uganda at Buwenge sub county- Jinja District Uganda.110 children and adults with intellectual disability benefited in the eye screening. During the screening process 12 athletes were given spectacles, while 20 athletes were given night glasses to support their eyesight.
At the same function, Family health forum was conducted, in attendance there were over 20 family members from same community. They were trained on sexual behavior among athletes with intellectual disability, addressing issues affecting athletes in their families and communities.
Special Olympics Uganda currently offers multiple health screening programs throughout the country i.e. FUNFitness (physical therapy) Healthy Hearing (audiology), Med Fest (sports physical exam), Opening Eyes (vision), Healthy Promotion and Special Smiles (dentistry). The exercises educate athletes and communities on healthy lifestyle choices and identify problems that may need additional follow-up.
