Key Achievements

  • 2015

    Los Angeles world summer games team won 7 medals:5 gold and 2 silver.

  • 2013

    SOU won gold at the World Winter Games Floor hockey championshipsheld in South Korea.

  • 2012

    SOU participated in the Africa Unity Cup football tournament, a Unified sports event organized by SOA. SOU was the 4th out of 11 competing nations.

  • 2011

    SOU represented Uganda in the World Summer Games in Athens and won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in athletics and swimming respectively.

  • 2011

    Uganda took a team to Athens Greece For the World summer Games

  • 2007

    Uganda took a team to China for the World summer Games.

  • 2006

    Florence Nabayinda became a staff member at SO Africa ( South Africa)

  • 2005

    Uganda joined programs from the more temperate climates for Winter Games in Nagano, Japan ( 14 Gold medals) and still Florence Nabayinda became a board member at SOI

  • 2001

    Uganda hosted the All Africa Conference at Speke Resort, Munyonyo with delegations from 34 African countries.

  • 2000

    SOU’s largest ever domestic event in September with Law Enforcement Torch Relay Run by 120 officers of Uganda Police and the 2nd National Games ( 17 teams from different districts participated)

  • 1999

    Uganda 31 member delegation in the 10th Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina USA, 21 medals ( 5 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 bronze) were brought by the victorious team.

  • 1998

    Uganda represented the whole of SO Black African programs at the 30th anniversary celebration in Chicago.Prominent Long– distance runner Florence Nabayinda represented Africa athletes at the 30th anniversary celebration in Chicago. She became one of the 12 pioneer Global messengers advocating for citizens with intellectual disabilities for two years.Uganda represented SO Africa during the 30 years anniversary of the Special Olympics Movement at THE WHITE HOUSE, under the invitation of the then First Lady Hilary Clinton wife of the president of USA.

  • 1997

    Uganda in East and Southern Africa Games in Arusha, Tanzania, where Florence Nabayinda wins 5 medals. ( 4 Gold and 1 silver)

  • 1995

    Won 2 gold, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals at the 9th Special Olympics World Summer games in USA.

  • 2003

    The national team attended the world Summer Games in Dublin , Ireland and Belfast, Northern Ireland. They returned with the largest harvest of 22 medals ( 11 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze )

 

Health interventions:

  •   SOU has held three health screening events to date. The first was held in December 2011 at the Makerere University grounds, the second in June 2012 in Kamwenge (western region) and the third in July 2013 in Jinja (eastern region).

Sports events for the Young athletes program:

  • 2010.  SOU is training young athletes and encouraging families with PWIDs to involve their members. So far this has been done in Central and eastern region and November 2010
  •   SOU has an established leadership training for athletes that has been running since 2011. To date, SOU has trained 45 athlete leaders under the Athlete Leadership Program (ALPs)
